Install Windows 7 from a USB Flash Drive (UFD)

April 6th, 2010 Trev No comments

Looking for a newer and faster way to install Windows 7? Try installing it from a USB Flash Drive (UFD).* What you will need:

  • At least a 4 GB USB Flash Drive
  • Windows 7 Install Media
  • A computer that can boot from a USB drive

Step 1: Connect the UFD to a computer running Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Double check to make sure that there is nothing on the UFD that needs to be saved because the drive will be formatted.

Step 2: Open an elevated command prompt and type diskpart. (To open an elevated command prompt right click and “Run as administrator”).

Step 3: At the DISKPART> prompt, type list disk. Identify the UFD that you wish to use.

Step 4: At the DISKPART> prompt, type select disk X (where X is the number of the UFD that you wish to use).

Step 5: At the DISKPART> prompt, type clean. When the disk is clean, type create partition primary.

Step 6: At the DISKPART> prompt, type format fs=fat32 quick. When the format is completed type active and then exit.

Step 7: Copy all the files located on the Windows 7 installation DVD to the UFD.

Step 8: Boot from the UFD on the computer that you wish to install Windows 7 on. You may either have to edit your BIOS settings on the computer to boot from the UFD or you may need to enter the Boot Device Menu in order to boot from the UFD.

* The potential for data loss is very high when formatting disks. Proceed at your own risk!

Windows 7 was released today and I downloaded my $30 student copy of it from Digital River that I posted earlier. All excited and revving to go, I was surprised when a I received an EXE file instead of an ISO. Well the nice people over at Digital River somehow forgot to tell us that little fact. Don’t worry too much, the folks over at MaximumPC have a solution.

AVG reports False Positives

October 20th, 2009 Trev No comments

I recently was working on a computer that was having some major issues and wanted to scan it for malware/viruses. The computer was unable to connect to the internet so I was attempting to download Malwarebytes Antimalware on my desktop to transfer over to the troubled computer.

The file downloaded quickly and as soon as it finished AVG popped up complaining that the file mbam-setup.exe was infected with Trojan Horse PSW.Banker5.ZOY. It’s difficult to believe that CNET has infected software on their site so upon further investigation it appears that AVG is being hyper critical. It was not only labeling Malwarebytes as a Trojan but other programs like AVAST Antivirus as well.
